Porcelain Veneers

Chips, cracks, discoloration, or other aesthetic concerns can be a source of embarrassment for some individuals. Patients who want to bring more symmetry and balance to their smiles can opt for porcelain veneers. These custom-made ceramic shells are thin, but strong. They adhere to the front teeth surfaces to conceal a wide range of imperfections.

Our cosmetic dentists in Providence, RI provide top-tier care for individuals and families in our community. We also offer concierge care to hundreds of patients across the United States.

Conditions Treated by Veneers

Porcelain veneers can address a number of cosmetic concerns. Your dentist may recommend this treatment if you have:

  • Gaps between the teeth
  • Minor misalignment
  • Chips, cracks, or fractures
  • Deep intrinsic discoloration

Sometimes referred to as “instant orthodontics”, porcelain veneers can give the illusion of straighter teeth. Keep in mind, however, that more complex cases of gapped teeth or misalignment will likely require orthodontic treatment. During a consultation with our cosmetic dentist in Providence, RI, we can discuss all options with you in detail.

About the Treatment Process

In most cases, porcelain veneer treatment can be completed in two office visits. During the first appointment, your dentist will prepare the teeth by removing small amounts of enamel. Then, impressions will be taken and sent to a dental lab, where a ceramist will start creating your veneers. This process usually takes between two and four weeks. In the meantime, your dentist will place temporary veneers.

Once your veneers are finished, the lab will ship them to our office, and we will schedule you for a second visit for placement. After assessing your new veneers for a proper fit, we will permanently bond them into place.

Comprehensive Results

Few aesthetic treatments offer the results provided by porcelain veneers. In addition to hiding chips and deep discoloration, they can also alter the shape and size of the teeth for truly comprehensive outcomes.

Deep intrinsic stains – due to genetics, certain medications, or trauma – cannot be successfully treated with teeth whitening. Patients with this condition can opt for veneers instead for a brighter, whiter smile.

Maintaining Your Veneers

Porcelain veneers last between five and 15 years on average. When cared for properly, they can last even longer. Here are a few ways to protect your investment:

  • Brush and floss every day. Be sure to use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a nonabrasive toothpaste, as harsh ingredients can damage the porcelain.
  • Use an antibacterial rinse. Using a daily rinse not only helps wash away food particles and debris, but it also keeps harmful bacteria at bay.
  • Avoid hard, crunchy, and sticky foods. Certain foods can dislodge or damage your porcelain veneers. Be mindful of the dietary choices you make and reduce your intake of caramel, taffy, chips, nuts, and popcorn.
  • Visit your dentist. Regular dental exams and cleanings help ensure that your porcelain veneers stay in excellent condition. Any issues can be detected and treated early on, preventing more serious problems in the future.
